Welcome Summer: A Season of Light, Vitality & Renewal 🌞

Summer Is Here! 🌤

Harness the Energy of the Summer Solstice for Wellness and Renewal

The first day of summer, marked by the summer solstice, is more than just a change of seasons—it’s a celebration of abundance, growth, and vitality. As the longest day of the year, cultures across the globe have long honored this day as a time to reconnect with nature, realign our health, and recharge both mind and body. The extended daylight offers an open invitation to prioritize our physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing in simple, meaningful ways.

🌿 My Summer Rhythm

When I’m not supporting clients on their health journeys, you’ll usually find me outside, gardening, hiking, biking, paddling, or exploring the beach. I try to soak up the warmth and beauty while it lasts. Longer days, warm nights, a slower pace, and new adventures!

Of course, all that outdoor time also means prolonged sun exposure, and summer rays can be intense. With the right tools, relaxed state of mind, and clean options, I’ve found a way to enjoy the sun safely and intentionally, and make the most of my summer.

Today, I’m sharing how you can harness the energy of summer to feel vibrant, grounded, and energized.

💧 Stay Hydrated with Nourishing Foods, Pure Water + Electrolytes

The more active you are (hello hikes and beach days!), the more important hydration becomes.

Remember, hydration doesn’t start the moment you're thirsty, it’s a 24-hour process. Begin hydrating before heading outside, and continue replenishing throughout the day.

Listen to your body: Thirst, dry lips, and dark urine are all signs to drink more.
Time your activities: Work out earlier or later in the day to avoid peak heat and minimize fluid loss.
Watch your urine color: Pale yellow = well-hydrated.  Dark yellow = time to drink up!

Get creative by trying infused water with fruits and vegetables for more flavor. Some favorites include watermelon, strawberries, cucumber, and herbs such as mint. Crush them up to release their flavors and then put them in the water and let them sit for a while

I like liquid electrolyte drops for ease and a no-taste option.

I use a sugar-free electrolyte concentrate made with clean minerals, no dyes, fillers, or synthetic ingredients. Just a few drops in your water and you're good to go.
☀️Try: E-Lyte by BodyBio, a simple, on-the-go drop you can add to water anytime. E-Lyte uses a balanced proprietary blend of electrolytes great for every day use.

🍓 Prioritize Seasonal & Organic Whole Foods

Summer is the season of vibrant produce, rich in antioxidants, hydration, fiber, and essential nutrients.

Farmer’s Markets all over the country are in full swing, take a visit to your local market or explore “u-pick farms” for berries and stone fruits. My local favorite is Bella Organic Farms. Many healthy foods are high in water content, and they can help you stay hydrated. More than 20% of your daily water intake can come from something you eat rather than drink. Water-rich foods can help you beat the heat.

Focus on:

  • Hydrating-rich foods like: cucumbers, radishes, watermelon, broccoli, zucchini, strawberry, celery, tomato, and peaches, They all have over 90% water content, making them ideal to consume in the summertime heat.

  • Gut-loving fiber: berries, zucchini, stone fruits like nectarines

  • Anti-inflammatory fats & proteins: avocados, olive oil, nuts, seeds, wild-caught fish

🌞 Get Your Daily Vitamin D Safely

Vitamin D is essential for:

  • Bone strength & calcium absorption.

  • Immune function.

  • Mood regulation & serotonin production.

You don’t need to bake in the sun to benefit from it. Just 10–30 minutes of sun exposure daily is enough to maintain optimal vitamin D levels. Aim for morning sunlight when UV levels are lower.

☀️ Bonus: Light exposure boosts mental clarity and emotional health, helping regulate your circadian rhythm and lifting your mood, especially around the solstice.

🧴 Use Clean, Mineral-Based SPF

Most conventional sunscreens contain chemical UV filters, synthetic preservatives, and artificial fragrances. Many of these are known skin irritants or allergens  Even some “natural” sunscreens can sneak in highly processed seed oils, which oxidize under sun exposure and generate DNA-damaging free radicals.

✅ Instead, choose clean, mineral-based options that are safer for you and the planet; some are reef-friendly!
✅ Use apps like EWG Skin Deep to vet ingredients quickly.
✅ Remember to use a wide-brim hat to protect your scalp and face naturally.

☀️ I personally use Sky and Sol Sunscreen. It’s perfect for sensitive skin, like mine.  Sky and Sol uses a skin-compatible tallow base for no greasiness or breakouts, anti-white-cast formula, and is reef-safe, fragrance-free.  It pairs well with Sky and Sol’s SPF Lip Care.  You can find products like this and other sun-safe summer bundles like the PURO3 Summer Rescue kit here.

🦟 Choose Non-Toxic Bug Repellent

No one wants to be mosquito bait, but that doesn’t mean you need to resort to harsh chemicals!

Sprays and lotions are the most common forms of bug repellent, but not all are created equal. When choosing the best product for you and your family, there are several key factors to keep in mind:

  • Check the label: Make sure it specifies which insects it repels, how long the protection lasts, and whether there are any age restrictions or safety warnings.

  • Know your environment: Are you going into the woods, a tropical area, or just spending time in your backyard? The location (and the type of pests common there) should inform your choice.

  • Understand the active ingredients: Look for what’s being used to repel bugs, and research any potential health concerns, especially if you have allergies, sensitivities, or are applying it to children.

☀️I like PURO3 brand Insect Repellent to help keep pests away and their Bug Bite Relief for itching and swelling if I do get a bite.

Or try Anti Bug Shake and Spray from Badger.  It repels insects naturally with the aroma of Citronella, Rosemary, and Wintergreen essential oils. It’s laboratory tested to repel mosquitoes, and contains no synthetic chemicals, DEET or petroleum products.

Clean, homemade bug sprays made with essential oils are not only safer for humans, but they can also be surprisingly effective. Oils like lemon eucalyptus, lavender, thyme, tea tree, and peppermint offer powerful, plant-based protection without compromising your health or the environment.

☀️I like to use essential oils from Vibrant Blue Oils like:

  • Peppermint

  • Lavender

  • Lemon Eucalyptus

  • Tea Tree

Diffuse them outdoors, apply them diluted, or choose a clean, store-bought product.

Although many natural ingredients are considered safe for human use, it’s important to remember that not all essential oils are safe for topical use, or to use around pets.

**If you’re planning to use essential oils on your skin, you may need to dilute them with a carrier oil, like olive or coconut oil.

Caution that some essential oils, like citrus oils, can be toxic when applied directly to the skin. This means sun exposure may cause severe burns and irritation.

🌻 Repair & Recharge with Movement

With longer days and warmer weather, there are so many ways to move joyfully outdoors.

Whether it's hiking, swimming, cycling, or simply walking in nature, physical activity:

  • Boosts cardiovascular health.

  • Builds strength and flexibility.

  • Reduces stress, anxiety, and depression.

☀️ Just remember: more activity means more recovery and more water! Be kind to your body and show it some support with products like:

  • Arnica Montana by Boiron for muscle recovery.

  • Phytoprofen by Thorne for inflammation and joint health.

  • Magnesium Bisglycinate for stress, sleep, and muscle relaxation.

  • ReMag® Balm by RNA Reset is an intensely moisturizing body balm using 200mg of liquid magnesium per teaspoon, and a mix of coconut oil and shea butter.

🌎 Embrace an Intentional Summer

When you embrace summer with care, choosing clean products, nourishing foods, and smart sun habits, you’re not just supporting your own body. You’re honoring your emotional and physical wellbeing, and the health of our planet.
And let this solstice be your reminder to live in rhythm with nature, with purpose, and with heart.
